theFrontDoor, an innovator of advanced broadcast video solutions, announces the availability of its next generation GRIDSHOT® playout solution featuring real-time 4K UHD encoding, using HEVC with HLG HDR support enabled by NETINT Codensity ASIC-powered VPUs (Video Processing Units). The GRIDSHOT platform delivers a reliable, fully hot-standby redundant playout service with automatic failover for linear television channels.
GRIDSHOT’s all new 4K UHD functionality is the result of a close collaboration with NETINT Technologies. NETINT Codensity T408 VPU’s enable GRIDSHOT to deploy commercial off-the-shelf server hardware, thus enabling cost-effective implementation options. This breakthrough performance is enabled by NETINT’s proprietary ASIC technology that enables real-time, ultra-low latency 4K HEVC encoding with a 10x density advantage compared to CPU-based software encoders.
Working with NETINT, this next-gen UHD version of GRIDSHOT supports real-time encoding of 4K resolution using HEVC and HLG (High Dynamic Range Hybrid Log Gamma) HDR. To facilitate interoperability between source content and downstream devices, NETINT VPUs enable GRIDSHOT to use Dynamic Color Space Signaling (DCSS) to automatically detect the original color space of the source content (BT.709 or BT.2020). DCSS utilizes the detected color space information input to trigger the receiving device to switch automatically to the optimal color space mapping.
GRIDSHOT supports both the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) standards describing the embedding of transfer coefficients for HDR HLG applications. This ensures broad compatibility of HDR HLG in different regions (PAL, NTSC, SECAM). Using dynamic HLG HDR signaling, an embedded trigger can be used by connected television sets and set top boxes to automatically enable the HLG HDR display mode.
Since a significant amount of content is acquired in lower resolutions and lower frame rates, the GRIDSHOT playout solution features support for mixed source content acceptance. By supporting mixed 25 and 50 fps content, the transition from HD to 4K UHD broadcast is simplified. The fully redundant GRIDSHOT® playout is built for flexibility and stability for reliable broadcasting of 4K UHD signals while simultaneously solving mixed source content provisions and color spaces.
